Hand block printing is a centuries old craft performed by the finest artisans in India. This painstaking process involves the application of raw mixed paints on fabric using handmade irons or woodblocks. Several blocks are used to create one print because each color in the design is applied separately. The printed fabrics are then carefully laid out to dry in the sun transforming the color of the paint from dull and muddy into brilliant hues. Because this is all done by hand (not one machine involved) and then dried by the sun, you will find some printing differences with the fabrics and products. This gives the collection its unique charm, and makes each piece special.

I, NOM, would like to represent NOM&ADA and take a moment to share this amazing organization in Japan that I have come across in the past month after the 3.11.2011 horrifying Japan earthquake, tsunami, and the Fukushima nuclear power plant incident. Countless lives were lost and an unimaginable number of people are still missing and living in shelters. Here are some powerful and heartbreaking images from The New York Times.

Being a resident of Japan, I have had access to certain updates that foreign media might have not covered in the last month. This amazing volunteer organization called UKC JAPAN may be one of those few groups doing amazing things to help, but have not received as much publicity to get sufficient funds or the support. As you can see from their blog ( the link connected above ) they have been involved in the Japan relief efforts by rescuing ANIMALS greatly affected by the natural disaster in combination with the evacuated areas near the Fukushima nuclear power plants.

Like humans, many animals/pets were affected and have lost their homes and families. Like humans, they have gone through traumatizing experiences. While many relief acts and funds were being sent to support the people, not as much attention was given to care for animal lives. UKC JAPAN has truly stepped up. They are one of the few organizations focusing strictly on relief efforts in saving lives of forcefully abandoned animals ( majority of them dogs and cats ) and sheltering them in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. Most of these animals were found in the irradiated areas of Fukushima, where a majority of the owners were forced to evacuate not knowing that they wouldn't be able to return for days and months. The pets were rescued while roaming around looking for their owners, in search of food and water, and simply trying to survive. Some of the other animals sheltered are those brought in by others or requested to be saved by the owners, for most designated shelters and temporary homes provided by the government do not allow pets. Please check out these clips from several Japanese TV networks.

Since 3.11.2011, they have rescued over 150 pets, sheltering them, finding new and temporary homes for those animals awaiting the return of their owners.

Kanagawa Prefecture, where the animals are sheltered, is about an hour or two away from Tokyo. When I found out about this organization I immediately wanted to go volunteer and help these animals in need. I'm sure ADA would've been right there with me, if she was here. ^_^ My dear friend miss "A" and I have gone down to Glory Tazs (name of the shelter) several times to take them out for walks, clean the cages, feed them, organize donated goods, give them love and affection, and anything else they needed help with.

Donated food, towels, and toilet sheets.

Shelters with proper ventilation, handmade by staff and volunteers.

I will continue to go volunteer and personally donate as much as I can. As part of Japan Earthquake Relief, NOM&ADA has decided to donate the proceeds of our totes to this amazing organization, UKC JAPAN.

This dive site is a must do for advanced divers who are looking for something a little different. The name means "little angel" in English and there may not be a better way to describe this magical dive site. The setting is perfect as you walk a short distance through the jungle to the rather large hidden away cenote. To describe it simply this cenote does nothing else but go straight down 200 feet. Fresh water with unlimited visibility makes up the first one hundred feet and salt water the other half is separated by a mystical layer of hydrogen sulfate. This layer in the middle appears as a dense cloud from the top and strange colored hue from the bottom. Bring your dive lights, as you will need them if you are going to penetrate through to the bottom. There are not many dives in the world where you can dive in the clouds at 100 feet and see trees, but this is one. (image/text via)

Denim is an essential item in the majority's closet. And a good pair is loyal like a pup; it's not as disposable of a garment as most clothing tend to be. Choose purposefully and take care. (instructions courtesy of Imogene + Willie)
1. Turn your jeans inside out.

2. Set washing machine to gentle. Cold for dark wash. Gentle hot for lighter wash.

3. Let machine begin to fill. Add detergent. For a darker wash use a mild detergent like Woolite Black.

4. Place your jean by itself in the washing machine.

5. When the washing machine is through, pull jeans from the washbasin and turn right-side out.

6. Hang jeans to dry.

7. To soften, place jeans in dryer on Tumble No Heat, sometimes marked "Fluff". If you have no dryer, beat jeans with or against an object.

About a week before the disaster hit Japan on 3.11.2011, I was able to visit one of the few remaining historical neighborhoods that still embodies the nostalgic charm of old school Tokyo. An area known as Yanesen, which includes the 3 districts Yanaka, Nezu, and Sendagi. An interesting meshing of where old meets new adds to the unique ambiance of the town.

Representing good ol' NY and Tokyo, we are happy to introduce Johnny Strategy in the mix! An old friend of NOM from grade school (how time flies...), he is also the profound writer of an international design blog, Spoon & Tamago. Johnny shares his unique multicultural sensibility towards art, design, culture, and aesthetics with its primary focus from Japan, but not limited to. Spoon & Tamago is run by a husband-and-wife team, and they also have an adorable etsy shop full of one of a kind kids items.

What inspired you or the duo to start Spoon & Tamago?

Spoon & Tamago has undergone numerous reincarnations. It started out as a xanga blog almost 10 years ago as a personal diary. It became a wedding blog, a baby blog as well as a personal portfolio site. It wasn't until 2007 that the blog, as it's known today, began - the impetus being a mere desire to catalog images and designs that inspired me so I could go back to them later.

Who is your favorite artist or designer?
There are so many amazing designers, both dead and alive, that I admire immensely. But taking into account the influence they have had on me both aesthetically and philosophically, I suppose there is only one that ultimately stand out: Isamu Noguchi. It's a little obvious, I know, but Noguchi-san is just so damn good.

Working with a partner can be a challenge, let alone a spouse can be amazing or disastrous at times. How do you guys make it work?
For us it came naturally. Perhaps because we share very similar tastes. I don't think we've found anything difficult about working together. But recently my spouse has been dedicating more and more time to her recently launched etsy shop so there has been less room to bump heads.

What do you miss most about Tokyo?
The foooooood.

What is your favorite spot in NYC?
I'm going to have to say Zibetto Espresso Bar in midtown (6th Ave and 56th St). I often head here before going to work for the best espresso and croissant I've had in recent memory.

If you can travel to anywhere in the world, where would it be, and why?

Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia. When it rains the salt flat is transformed into this gigantic mirror reflecting the sky. If you've never seen pictures you have to check it out http://bit.ly/gGVYp2. It's unworldly. Like nothing I've ever seen before.

Your travel music playlist?

If I was to travel tomorrow it would probably include some Andrew Bird, Passion Pit, Jonsi, Broken Bells, Neutral Milk Hotel, The Flaming Lips, Fleet Foxes, Of Montreal, The Beatles, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan rounded out with some Gershwin, Rachmaninoff and the ultimate escapist track - Fast Car by Tracy Chapman.

DIY Yoga Mat Bag

Furoshiki, dating back to AD 710 to 794, is a traditional Japanese wrapping cloth used to wrap objects. It was first used to bundle clothes at public baths. Then it became a means for merchants to transport goods and decorate gifts. Not only is it a creative and thoughtful way to present something, it is rather eco-friendly. What's so stellar is it only takes a singular piece of any fabric to transform something into simply amazing...and functional!

In need of a yoga mat bag, up-cycling a thrifted skirt with a great print (and an irreparable hole) came to the rescue...took the elastic out of the waistband and cut a side seam open! Be creative! Any fabric large enough will do!

Place rolled yoga mat at a diagonal and fold in shorter corner ends of fabric.

Fold over and cross remaining opposite ends.

Flip yoga mat over to the other side so that the crossed ends you just made are now facing down to hold it in place.

Knot each long end as close to mat at possible.

Tie the tips of each end together to form the handle of the bag.

Throw on your shoulder and go!

Dogwood trees were my parents' favorite flowering tree. As a kid we'd always have to plant a couple in the yard of each place we lived. Every time I see them, I reminisce. Looking up through the branches, petals like clouds across the sky.

I can't live without my fresh cup of joe (several times a day) and found these fascinating ceiling lights at Portland's own Stumptown Coffee. They reminded me of grapes, which I love as well!

Was out and about enjoying our waffles from The Waffle Window and as we headed back towards the car, we came across this amazing tree... lol. So random! I wish I had a tree like this in my backyard when I was growing up!

Hi Victoria, can you please tell us a little about yourself and how you got started as a stylist?

I've always been interested in fashion since I was a kid. My first job in the industry was at Nordstrom, the beginning of my sophomore year. My mom was a single parent of three children on a teacher's salary so I needed a job to afford the clothes I wanted to buy and what better place than Nordstrom. The discount also added incentive. After high school I went to college and studied Fashion. The highlight of my college experience was living in Florence, Italy and attending Lorenzo de Medici for a semester. Post college I worked as an assistant / stylist and eventually moved to Portland and opened a Men's and Women's clothing boutique. I sold the boutique after about a year and a half to pursue styling as a full-time career. Currently I work in Portland as a stylist and fashion blogger.

What most inspires you?

Thrift Stores!!!!!

Where is your favorite place to travel? Any recommends here?

Spain! Barcelona in particular. The city is so amazing! Beautiful people, amazing fashion, architecture, food, night life, colors. Sadly, I haven't traveled since I have moved to Portland, other than for work. I'm definitely overdue for a vacation.

If you're in Barcelona don't miss the works of Antonio Gaudi, famous architect, and check out Las Ramblas Street.

Your really putting me on the spot! Here we go...Frances May, Little Edies, Rock-N-Rose, Tiga, Clyde Common, Spirit of 77, Olympic Provisions, Ace Hotel, Stumptown, The Lady Cave, Big Egg, Porque No, Navarre, and The Bins just to name a few. I could go on forever with good places to eat.

Ada's Local Finds: The Waffle Window

NOM&ADA headed to The Waffle Window over the weekend for a quick bite. It's a small window located on the side of Bread and Ink Cafe where you order just that, sweet and/or savory waffles.

We both opted for the Farm Fusion - mushroom, spinach, roasted pepper, tomato and marinated chevre atop a belgian waffle. There was a bit of maple syrup already on the waffle, which was actually a nice compliment to the toppings. No dessert this time around, but we'll be back for the Nutella!

What an amazing afternoon at Starr Alpaca Farm in not so Boring,OR! Spur of the moment and well worth the adventure! We've looked at these photos a gazillion times today and laughed out loud, remembering the silly moments shared with these curious gentle creatures. Behind a pleasant smile, each had a unique personality. Thank you so much to Vallorie and her sweet dogs for having us. It meant a lot. Yarn is made from their fleece and Vallorie marks the names of which alpaca it came from on each skein. Pretty cool.

When something is made by hand, there is a personal level of quality & purpose compared to run-of-the mill goods. One would like to think that the item is appreciated more...and cherished. Something that takes time to make and has been given the attention by only 1 or 2 individuals means that there is passion & skill involved. This carries through to the product and at best is shared with the customer. Not to mention, each item, like our Holoholo handcrafted in Saitama Prefecture, is unique to you.

When you think about it, there is sustainability in quality goods. If something is only meant to get better with age or heralds a need to keep it for as long as seemingly possible, there is less waste.

Be thoughtful, take care.

Two women that I adore. My grandmother Joaquina (dad's side) who I called Uma. She lived to be 97 and was the kindest woman on the planet. And a close family friend, my Aunt Mary, who I would bake with every weekend and then we'd give away our goodies around her neighborhood. Miss you~
